金箔の絵になる風景
箔一の本社は石川県金沢市の中心部にあります。その近代的な構造とは裏腹に、伝統的な工芸品への取り組みと、周辺地域の豊かな文化の歴史は、着実に成長し、現在では900社、3000人の従業員が22種類の公式伝統工芸品を製造しています。
ユネスコの創造都市に認定された金沢市は、何世紀にもわたって自然災害を避け、平和に暮らしてきました。その結果、金沢城や兼六園周辺の武家屋敷街は、狭い路地や土塀、石畳など、今でも歴史的な魅力を放っています。また、近くにある歴史的な木造の茶室は、芸者が有力な武士をもてなした時代にタイムスリップさせてくれます。
歴史
芸術と文化に彩られた街
金沢の工芸文化は、16世紀の富豪・前田家にまでさかのぼることができます。将軍家を脅かす存在として、武力衝突を避け、芸術文化に多大な投資を行った前田家は、全国から職人を集め、今日まで続く芸術文化を築き上げました。
また、前田藩は金箔の製造を命じ、400年の歴史を持つ金箔産業を興しました。しかし、その後まもなく、将軍は金箔の製造を金沢を除く一部の地域に限定することを厳しく命じました。しかし、金箔産業は人目につかないところで静かに続けられ、規制が緩和されるとすぐに生産を再開することができました。湿度や水質にも恵まれ、現在では金沢が金箔市場の99％を独占しています。
1975年、浅野邦子が金沢金箔を単なる商品としてではなく、ブランドとして認知させるために創業したのが「箔一」です。その結果、金箔だけでなく、金箔を使った伝統工芸品も製造するようになりました。さらに、これまで生産過程で捨てられていた麻紙が吸水性に優れていることを発見し、顔の脂を落とす商品として売り出すというアイデアも生み出しました。現在では、素材の事業だけでなく、伝統工芸品や化粧品、食用金箔など、幅広い商品を生産しています。
特徴
伝統の技を現代に活かす
箔一の金箔素材や工芸品は、職人の技の幅と奥深さに驚かされます。例えば、金塊が打ち出され、厚さ0.0001mmの金箔になるまでには、さまざまな工程があります。家庭用のアルミホイルが0.0160mmですから、その160倍もの厚みがあります。各工程は専門の職人が担当し、工具や静電気、激しい呼吸などで壊れることのないよう、壊れやすいシートを扱えるようにします。
箔一では、金箔の普及活動を積極的に行っており、様々な業種の職人だけでなく、金箔に興味のある一般の方にも広くご利用いただいています。定期的にワークショップを開催するほか、伝統的な技法を学び、繊細な金箔の取り扱いを体験できるミュージアムを併設しています。
箔一は、SDGs（持続可能な開発目標）のコンセプトを長く受け入れてきました。箔一の人気商品であるあぶらとり紙は、もともと廃棄物であったものをヒット商品として生まれ変わらせ、環境に貢献します。また、地域の森林を間伐する際に出る廃材を利用して、季節の商品を作っています。さらに、傷んだ工芸品を金で補修し、その欠点を楽しむ「金継ぎ」という日本的な発想も取り入れています。
