About the Design – Yoshidaya Style & Standing Hollyhock (Tachi Aoi, Hu Aoi)
This small plate features a traditional Yoshidaya style, one of the most iconic painting techniques in Kutani ware. Originating in the 19th century, Yoshidaya ceramics are known for their bold use of green, yellow, purple, and dark blue—without red—creating a rich and elegant look.
The motif is the Standing Hollyhock (Tachi Aoi), a symbol of strength, growth, and nobility in Japanese culture. Its upright form and vibrant leaves reflect nature’s vitality and grace, beautifully captured in this timeless design.
The pattern on the plate is called “Yoshidaya houaoi” and is based on accessories worn by ancient noble people in India. The hollyhock has a floral language meaning 'noble' and 'dignified'.
The pattern is believed to bring about good fortune.
