Aomori-Tohoku

Area
Where Snow and Light Weave Through a Northern Port Town
Aomori City sits at the heart of Japan's northernmost prefecture, facing Mutsu Bay to the north and flanked by the Hakkoda Mountains to the south. Long a hub for fishing and trade, its rich natural resources have sustained local craftsmanship for centuries. The dramatic contrast between snow-covered winters and the blazing summer Nebuta Festival forms the very soul of this city's craft culture.
The most iconic craft here is Tsugaru Vidro glassware, born from a glass factory that once made floats for fishing nets. When a craftsman added sand from the nearby Shichiri Nagahama beach to the raw materials, a deep, luminous green emerged — and a traditional craft was born. Today, using over one hundred colors and nine techniques, artisans capture the four seasons of Aomori in vivid, everyday glassware.
The city's craft spirit is also woven into the Nebuta Festival, where residents have shaped wire, pasted paper, and painted floats since childhood. The longing for color and light after the long northern winter shines through both the glowing Nebuta lanterns and the brilliant hues of Tsugaru Vidro — a craftsmanship as deep and radiant as Aomori itself.

History
We created Tsugaru Vidro and sublimated it into traditional Japanese crafts
HOKUYO GLASS is a glass workshop with long history in Aomori Prefecture, founded in 1949 as a factory that manufactures floating balls for fishery.
At that time, there were other companies that manufacture floating balls, but our products differentiate in quality, high enough to receive the assurance.
In 1977, "Tsugaru Vidro" was created by utilizing the technique of "Spray Blowing" cultivated through the manufacture of glass floating balls.
After that, craftsmen paid much attention to technology development, and continued to learn high proprietary proportions of raw materials that produce beautiful colors on glass material.
We constantly strive to acquire new technologies and development, and now we are certified as Aomori prefecture traditional craftsmanships.

Characteristic
Green glass born from coincidence, Top Secret Raw Material Recipe
Originally we made colorless transparent glass, but when a craftworker added sand of Shichiri Nagahama (Aomori Prefecture) famous as a scenic spot, a wonderful green glass was born.
Then the craftsmen were absorbed into creating new colors.
Tsugaru Vidro that was born like that is often described as "handmade glass thatexpresses the seasons of Japan".
Its characteristics lie in a soft warm color that is born by its own unique formula.
We use more than 100 colors produced by craftsman's longtime intuition and experience, to express the colors of the four seasons unique to Japan.
By combining various colored glasses, we express the powerfulness, pleasure and transience of the dazzling scenaries of each season.
