Tottori Information
Tottori Prefecture is located in the west of the main island of the Japanese archipelago, and is somewhat long and narrow from east to west. The Sea of Japan borders the prefecture to the north, where the Tottori Sand Dunes, one of Japan's most famous coastal dunes, are located. In addition, along the Tamagawa River in Kurayoshi City, you can enjoy the unique scenery of storehouses with white walls and red roof tiles. Sakaiminato City is the birthplace of Shigeru Mizuki, creator of "Gegege no Kitaro," and is famous as the "Town of Specters."
One of Tottori Prefecture's crafts is "INSHU Washi (Papers)", handmade in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, which is one of the largest paper mills in Japan. The main raw materials are paperbush, paper mulberry, and gampi. Inshu is blessed with these natural materials and clear streams, which led to the development of papermaking techniques. Even today, paper is used for various purposes such as calligraphy, ink painting, and interior products."Yumihama Kasuri" is made on the Yumigahama Peninsula in western Tottori Prefecture and is characterized by the contrasting colors of indigo and white. Originally, farmers began weaving these fabrics for their homes, so many of the simple colors and patterns used are closely associated with daily life. Today, bags, coasters, hairpins, and other items that accompany daily life are still made from the woven fabric.
