Aomori Information

Located at the northernmost tip of Japan’s main island, Aomori Prefecture is a region blessed with rich nature and surrounded by the sea on three sides. The area experiences distinct four seasons, with snowy winters creating beautiful landscapes throughout the year. Visitors are especially attracted to the UNESCO World Heritage site Shirakami-Sanchi and the mysterious and scenic Lake Towada.

Aomori has long prospered as an important center of transportation and culture in northern Japan. The ancient Sannai-Maruyama Site, a large-scale Jomon archaeological site, offers insight into Japan’s rich prehistoric culture. In summer, the world-famous Aomori Nebuta Festival fills the streets with enormous illuminated floats and energetic performances.

Aomori is also renowned for its traditional crafts. “Tsugaru lacquerware,” known for its colorful layered patterns, and “Kogin embroidery,” admired for its warmth and delicate handcraftsmanship, are highly valued examples of Japanese artistry. The prefecture is also Japan’s leading producer of apples and is famous for its fresh seafood and rich culinary culture.
